Ogun 2027: Iyabo Obasanjo Claims Her Backers Were Attacked Prior to APC's Gubernatorial Agreement

Iyabo Obasanjo, a former governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun State, has voiced concerns over the process that led to the party's consensus candidate for the 2027 election, citing allegations that some of her supporters were assaulted.

Her comments come on the heels of Governor Dapo Abiodun's endorsement of Solomon Adeola as the APC's preferred governorship candidate during a caucus meeting in Abeokuta on April 13, 2026.

In a statement released on Thursday, Obasanjo expressed her initial support for the consensus arrangement, which she believed would promote unity within the party, but she was dissatisfied with certain aspects of its implementation.

Obasanjo stated that throughout her consultations ahead of the Ogun state governorship primaries, she consistently advocated for consensus as a means to reduce tension and prevent internal divisions, with the ultimate goal of securing electoral success in 2027.

Following Adeola's emergence, Obasanjo accepted the outcome and suspended her ambition, promptly congratulating him and halting all activities related to her gubernatorial aspiration in line with her earlier pledge and respect for party decisions.

However, Obasanjo alleged that the events surrounding the meeting undermined the expected inclusiveness of the consensus arrangement, citing the denial of entry to some of her supporters and the physical assault of two individuals by a party functionary.

She noted that such occurrences do not reflect the values of discipline, order, and mutual respect that the party represents, highlighting the need for a more inclusive approach.

Obasanjo also criticized the lack of recognition for some aspirants present at the meeting, including herself and Mr Tunde Lemo, despite their extensive consultations and strong grassroots momentum generated across Ogun state.

Despite her reservations, Obasanjo reaffirmed her loyalty to the APC and pledged her support for both the party's candidate and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that her loyalty remains unwavering and she will continue to support the party's success.

Obasanjo urged party leaders to adopt a more inclusive approach in future processes, emphasizing that true unity is not achieved by consensus alone, but through recognition, respect, and collective engagement.
