Ogbue: Ex-UBA Chief Honored for Visionary Guidance and Transformational Changes

On Wednesday, April 15, 2026, a gathering of Nigeria's elite took place at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos, to pay tribute to the late Chief Israel Chinwuba Ogbue, former Chairman of the United Bank for Africa, who had passed away on the morning of his 99th birthday.

The timing of his passing was seen as deeply symbolic by many, with his first son, Ikechukwu, describing it as "almost biblical, divine, poetic, and profound beyond human comprehension, but undeniably divine", a moment when his life, defined by discipline, faith, service, and enduring impact, came full circle.

Born on February 18, 1927, into a family of ten children, Ogbue's life was marked by the quiet discipline of a catechist's home, where faith, hard work, integrity, education, and reverence for God were deeply ingrained values.

Recalling his late father's early life, Ikechukwu said Ogbue left for Lagos in the early 1950s and later travelled to the United Kingdom in pursuit of higher education, where he built lasting friendships and moved in a close-knit circle known as 'the four musketeers'.

Ogbue's discipline, rooted in love, was a guiding principle in his life, as Ikechukwu noted, "We lacked nothing, yet we were taught to treat everyone equally, regardless of status", a lesson that stayed with his children, including Dr Awele Elumelu.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu described Ogbue as a man who "displayed dignity and strategic foresight" and provided "steady, principled leadership during a pivotal period in the banking sector", a sentiment echoed by speakers who gathered to honour his legacy.

As a mentor to Africa's prominent business leaders, Ogbue was particularly close to Mr Tony Elumelu, Group Chairman of UBA, who said Ogbue treated him like his own son and taught him valuable lessons in the corporate world, showcasing his entrepreneurial instinct and belief in vision.

Elumelu also noted Ogbue's remarkable independence, even in advanced age, and his ability to drive himself from Lagos to Delta State until just a few years ago, demonstrating his resilience, discipline, and independence.

To his grandchildren, Ogbue's presence was a daily reality, with his granddaughter Ogechukwu Elumelu saying "his absence feels different because he has always been there", showing up for birthdays, milestones, and gatherings, and offering guidance and direction.

His influence extended beyond affection, with another granddaughter, Dr Onyinye Ogbue, noting that he influenced her life through music, as she began learning piano because of him, shaping how she experiences the world in a quiet, yet profound way.

Former UBA Chairman Ambassador Joe Keshi described Ogbue as "a well-respected and beloved leader whose service and dedication left an enduring legacy of resilience, vision, and a selfless pursuit of excellence", particularly in his role as Chairman, where he strengthened corporate governance and institutional integrity.

Former NICON MD/CEO Mr Ogala Osoka remembered Ogbue as a man whose mind remained sharp, inquisitive, and active until the very end, with conversations that were rich, reflective, and shaped by nearly a century of experience, showing that life is not just about passing through time, but about living with depth, meaning, and compassion.

In Onicha-Olona, Delta State, Ogbue's legacy is tangible, with Sir Chika Chiejina describing him as "a shining example of humanity whose life brought honour, peace, progress, and dignity to his people", leaving behind a physical, visible, and communal impact, including the donation of land for a proposed Grand Civic Centre.
