Oborevwori denounces purported police brutality in Delta, senior lawyer voices alarm

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has denounced the purported extrajudicial killing of 28-year-old Mine Ogidi, allegedly involving a police officer from the Effurun Area Command, in a incident that has sparked public outcry.

The governor's statement came on Thursday, as the public continued to react to the April 26 incident, which gained widespread attention after reports and video footage emerged days later.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Oborevwori characterized the incident as a "barbaric, unlawful, and grave violation of the sanctity of human life", and extended his condolences to the victim's family in Ujevwu, Udu Local Government Area.

Oborevwori emphasized that no citizen should be subjected to such treatment, and commended the Nigeria Police Force's leadership for initiating disciplinary measures, including the reported dismissal and planned prosecution of officers found culpable.

The governor viewed this action as a step towards accountability and restoring public confidence, and called for a thorough investigation into all those implicated, stressing that justice must be both done and seen to be done.

Oborevwori assured the bereaved family of the state government's support and pledged that the case would be followed through to its logical conclusion, while also urging residents to remain calm and law-abiding.

Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Kunle Edun, has described the killing as suspicious, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the incident, and announced that he is offering pro bono legal services to the victim's family.

Edun emphasized that it is crucial to determine whether the officer acted alone or under instruction, and stressed that allegations of unlawful possession of firearms do not justify lethal force, noting that due process must be followed in all cases.

He described the incident as deeply troubling, particularly as it reportedly occurred within a police facility, which should be a place of safety for citizens, and expressed confidence that the matter would be properly investigated and prosecuted.

Edun added that his legal team intends to pursue justice for the victim's family, and is engaging with police authorities in Delta State to ensure that the case is thoroughly examined.
