Obi Holds Talks with South African Officials to Tackle Anti-Nigerian Violence

Peter Obi, a presidential aspirant in the Nigerian Democratic Congress, has stepped up his efforts to safeguard Nigerians in South Africa amid fresh reports of xenophobic violence and growing depression among victims.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Obi disclosed his involvement in a series of high-level meetings with top South African government officials and political party leaders to address the crisis.

Obi's discussions with Nigerians in Cape Town on the preceding day were followed by meetings with three South African ministers and party leaders, where they delved into pressing issues such as immigration, regional cooperation, and peaceful coexistence.

His meetings included talks with Mr. Leon Schreiber, South Africa's Minister of Home Affairs and a key figure in the Democratic Alliance, as well as Mr. Velenkosini Hlabisa, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and leader of the Inkatha Freedom Party.

Obi also met with Mr. Gayton McKenzie, Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture and leader of the Patriotic Alliance, with the conversations centered on migration, economic pressures, youth unemployment, security concerns, and rising tensions faced by African foreigners in South Africa.

Describing the conversations as "productive and candid", Obi emphasized the need for Nigeria and South Africa to enhance their dialogue and seek solutions grounded in justice, mutual respect, and the rule of law.

Obi stressed that leaders and citizens must exhibit responsible leadership, compassion, and restraint, particularly during challenging times, to mitigate the situation.

The discussions also underscored the importance of upholding law-abiding behavior, avoiding violence, and resisting hate or provocation, while allowing lawful institutions to address grievances through democratic channels.

According to Obi, the future of Africa depends on its ability to foster unity, promote economic inclusivity, invest in communities, and uphold the dignity of every African, regardless of their location.
