Obi Explains Reason Behind Funding Education and Healthcare Institutions

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has explained that his decision to invest in schools and hospitals is driven by his belief that such institutions are critical to improving lives and building a better future for the country.

Obi stated this in a statement on Sunday marking his 65th birthday, where he reflected on his journey, public service and commitment to humanity.

The former Anambra State governor said birthdays should not only be occasions for personal celebration but moments for gratitude, sober reflection and renewed dedication to serving God and humanity.

“At sixty-five, birthdays should naturally become moments of deep reflection — moments to look back with gratitude to Almighty God for His abundant graces, examine the journey so far, and ask how the remaining years can be devoted more meaningfully to the service of God and humanity,” he said.

Obi noted that Nigeria’s realities require citizens and leaders to focus more on addressing challenges affecting millions of people rather than engaging in excessive celebrations.

He said despite the country’s abundant human and natural resources, many Nigerians continue to face difficulties including poverty, ill health, unemployment and limited opportunities.

According to him, his approach throughout his years in business, the corporate world and as governor had been to view positions of privilege as opportunities to positively impact lives.

Obi said he had consistently encouraged individuals and organisations who wished to honour him with expensive gifts or elaborate ceremonies to redirect such resources towards projects with lasting benefits.

He added that the philosophy had contributed to the establishment of schools, hostel blocks, support for educational institutions and other facilities serving less privileged communities.

“The greatest celebration of life is not what we receive from others, but the lives we can touch positively,” Obi said.

Marking the milestone, Obi began the day with a Mass of Thanksgiving in Onitsha, where he expressed appreciation to God for His grace, protection and guidance throughout his life.

He later visited St. Raphael’s Hospital, Umueri, in Anambra East Local Government Area, where he donated ₦10 million to support the hospital’s healthcare services.

Obi said his visit to the rural hospital reinforced the need for leaders to show compassion and provide support for people who may not have the resources to access essential services.

He described healthcare and education as key pillars of societal development, stressing that hospitals preserve lives while schools shape the future.

“Supporting both is, therefore, not just an act of charity — it is an investment in humanity and in the future of our nation,” he added.
