Obi commends rescue of Oyo students, calls for enhanced safety measures for kids in school

Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate for the 2027 election, has expressed gratitude for the successful rescue of abducted pupils and teachers in Oyo State, describing their release as a moment of thanksgiving, while also emphasizing the need for the government to fortify the country's security framework.

In a statement posted on his X account on Saturday, Obi conveyed his relief and appreciation for the successful operation, praising the efforts of security personnel and others who contributed to the victims' release.

Obi wrote, "I am greatly relieved and delighted to learn of the safe rescue of the schoolchildren who were kidnapped," and went on to thank all those involved in securing their freedom, particularly the security personnel and individuals working behind the scenes.

While celebrating the rescue, Obi stressed that no child should experience the trauma of abduction, highlighting the urgent need to enhance security nationwide due to the repeated kidnapping of schoolchildren.

He stated, "The recurring incidents of kidnapping, particularly of schoolchildren, underscore the urgent need to strengthen our security architecture and make the protection of lives and property the foremost responsibility of government."

Obi believes that every Nigerian child deserves to learn in a safe environment, free from fear and violence, saying, "Our children deserve to learn in an atmosphere of safety, not fear."

He added, "We must continue to work towards building a Nigeria where every child can pursue education without the threat of violence or abduction," emphasizing the importance of a secure learning environment.

Obi also rejoiced with the rescued pupils, their families, schools, and Nigerians over the successful operation, welcoming the news of their safe return.

The reaction from Obi followed the Presidency's confirmation that the abducted pupils and teachers were rescued alive during a coordinated operation involving security agencies.

According to the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, eight suspected kidnappers were arrested and several others were killed during the operation.

Onanuga noted that the victims were rescued without negotiations or concessions to the abductors, despite their demand for the release of one of their detained kingpins.
