Obasanjo says ‘anxious’ to read Gowon’s memoir, explains absence at book launch

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has expressed eagerness to obtain and read ‘My Life of Duty and Allegiance’, the newly released memoir of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, describing the book as an important contribution to Nigeria’s historical record.

Obasanjo made the remark while responding to questions from journalists during a visit to his residence regarding whether he had read the memoir, which was presented to the public on May 19, 2026, in Abuja.

“I am anxious to get a copy,” the former President said.

Speaking further, Obasanjo described Gowon as a leader whose life and service traversed some of the most critical periods in Nigeria’s history.

“General Gowon has spanned the most turbulent and eventful part of Nigerian history since independence. Giving us his account of events is very important, and he must be appreciated for the courage to do that,” Obasanjo stated.

The former President also explained the reason for his absence at the public presentation of the memoir, despite his longstanding relationship with the former military ruler.

“I wrote a heartfelt letter of apologies to General Gowon, my Oga, for my inability to attend,” he said.

In the apology letter dated May 4, 2026, Obasanjo conveyed his regrets over his inability to be present at the event, citing an international commitment.

“I will be unable to attend. As the Co-chair of the InterAction Council, I have a longstanding obligation to attend a scheduled meeting of the Council in Hong Kong, which coincides with the date, May 19, 2026, of your book presentation,” the former President wrote.

“As a fellow patriot, you will understand that this commitment is one I cannot easily defer,” he added.

The memoir, My Life of Duty and Allegiance, chronicles General Gowon’s life, military career, leadership experiences, and reflections on key events that shaped Nigeria’s history.

Obasanjo’s remarks underscore the significance attached to the publication by prominent statesmen and further highlight the enduring interest in first-hand accounts of Nigeria’s post-independence journey.
