NRC verifies railway accident close to Asham, reports no loss of life

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has acknowledged a train incident that took place near Asham at approximately 10:30 a.m. on Monday, involving a collision between a rear locomotive and a passenger coach.

This incident was deemed avoidable by the corporation, with Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kayode Opeifa attributing it to a coupling issue in a statement.

Preliminary reports suggested that a problem with the coupling mechanism led to the rear locomotive making contact with the coach directly behind it, according to the statement issued by the NRC.

As a result of the incident, some passengers suffered injuries and received immediate attention before being transported to a nearby medical facility for further treatment.

Fortunately, the corporation confirmed that there were no fatalities resulting from the incident.

In response to the incident, the NRC activated its emergency response procedures and dispatched relevant technical teams to the scene to manage the situation.

The Safety Investigation Bureau (SIB) is currently conducting a thorough investigation at the location, in accordance with established safety protocols, as stated by the corporation.
