The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) has introduced new guidelines to regulate truck movement into and out of the nation’s seaports as part of efforts to address congestion around the Apapa port corridor.

The new measures include the introduction of specific time windows for trucks moving from designated pre-gates to port terminals for cargo loading, aimed at improving access and ensuring smoother cargo evacuation.

In a directive issued to stakeholders through its technical partner, Truck Transit Park (TTP), the NPA announced the implementation of a 72-hour time threshold for trucks moving from pre-gates to terminals at the Tin-Can Island Port Complex.

The directive, which takes effect from July 16, 2026, requires trucks leaving designated pre-gate facilities to complete entry into their assigned terminals within 72 hours.

The NPA said the measure was designed to reduce congestion, improve port access and enhance efficiency in cargo evacuation.

The directive stated: “In line with the directive of the Nigerian Ports Authority, all stakeholders are hereby notified that effective from July 16th, 2026, a 72-hour time threshold from left pre-gates to in-terminal will be implemented at the Tin-Can Island Port Complex.

“Under this directive, trucks exiting the designated pre-gates facility must complete entry into their assigned terminal within 72 hours. The measure is intended to improve port access, reduce congestion and facilitate efficient cargo evacuation.”

The authority directed all terminal operators, transport companies, truck owners and other stakeholders to ensure full compliance with the new guidelines.
