NNPP sounds warning over INEC's failure to acknowledge party leadership

The New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, has once again reached out to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in a letter dated April 13, 2026, to demand immediate adherence to a court judgment and to request a meeting to address INEC's persistent non-compliance.

This latest letter, addressed to the INEC Chairman and copied to the Director of Legal, was sent through the party's solicitors, Lex Firma LP, and expressed concern over INEC's inaction more than three weeks after a Federal Capital Territory High Court judgment.

The party had previously written to INEC on March 24, 2026, to convey the judgment delivered on March 17, 2026, and to demand compliance within 72 hours as ordered by the court, but INEC has yet to respond or take any steps to comply.

According to the letter, despite the clear orders of the court, more than three weeks have passed without any response or formal communication from INEC, and no steps have been taken to comply with the subsisting judgment.

The NNPP finds this situation worrisome, particularly given the high-profile defection of Dr. Ajuji Ahmed and his associates to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, alongside Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

The party is surprised that INEC continues to withhold recognition from the authentic leadership of the NNPP while appearing to recognize individuals who have openly defected from the party and failed in their claims before courts of competent jurisdiction.

The NNPP also criticized INEC's disregard for judicial authority, warning of the implications for the rule of law and expressing distress over the notion that any person or authority can ignore a valid court judgment without recourse to due process.

Furthermore, the party faulted INEC for failing to engage with it, despite several letters, and noted that no response has been received and no formal invitation has been extended.

The NNPP reiterated its legal position, stressing that court judgments remain binding until set aside by a superior court, and noted that no order of stay of execution has been granted in the matter.

The party warned that continued delay in compliance may result in the disenfranchisement of thousands of its supporters, an outcome that would be both unjust and avoidable.

Without prejudice to the above, the NNPP requested a meeting between representatives of INEC and officials of the National Working Committee of the NNPP to discuss and resolve the issues, expressing hope that the proposed engagement would lead to constructive dialogue and an amicable resolution of the present impasse.

The party urged INEC to indicate a convenient date for the meeting, seeking to resolve the matter through amicable engagement.
