Nigeria's national team to face Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau, and Tanzania in qualifying rounds for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been placed in Group L of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification series, where they will face off against Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau, and Tanzania. This grouping sets the stage for a fiercely competitive qualifying campaign for the Nigerian team, which has claimed the African championship title three times.

Nigeria's opponents in Group L are all familiar foes, having previously competed against the Super Eagles in various CAF tournaments, with Guinea-Bissau being a recent opponent in both the 2021 and 2023 AFCON editions. The Super Eagles have also clashed with Tanzania, winning their opening group match 2–1 in the 2025 AFCON.

Madagascar has also had notable encounters with Nigeria, including a 2–0 victory over the Super Eagles in the 2019 tournament, highlighting the competitive nature of the group. As one of the co-hosts of the 2027 AFCON, alongside Kenya and Uganda, Tanzania is guaranteed a spot in the finals, regardless of their performance in the group.

Only one additional team from Group L will join Tanzania in the finals, while the top two teams from each of the other 11 groups will also secure qualification, ultimately forming the 24-team lineup for the tournament. The 2027 AFCON is scheduled to take place from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

The qualification matches are set to commence between September 21 and October 6, 2026, with subsequent matchdays planned for November 9–17, 2026, and the final round of fixtures scheduled for March 22–30, 2027. These matches will determine which teams will advance to the tournament.

Nigeria, having finished third at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, remains one of the most successful teams in African football, with three continental titles to their name, the most recent of which was won in 2013. The team's rich history and past successes make them a formidable opponent in the qualifying campaign.
