The Federal Government on Wednesday said Nigeria’s future economic growth, competitiveness and public service delivery will be driven largely by the country’s ability to harness digital technology.

Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, stated this while declaring open the Digital Transformation Summit 2026 in Abuja.

Akume, who also serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Galaxy Backbone Limited, described digital innovation as a key enabler of national development and called for greater collaboration among federal, state and local governments to advance Nigeria’s digital transformation agenda.

“The future of governance will be digital. The future of economic competitiveness will be digital. The future of public service delivery will be digital,” Akume said.

The summit, which coincided with the 20th anniversary of Galaxy Backbone, brought together government officials, technology experts and other stakeholders to explore strategies for strengthening digital governance and innovation across the country.

Akume said Galaxy Backbone had evolved over the past two decades into a critical national asset, providing digital infrastructure, cloud services, connectivity, cybersecurity solutions and secure networks that support government operations nationwide.

He noted that President Bola Tinubu’s digital transformation vision aligns with the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises innovation, transparency, institutional efficiency, inclusion and economic growth.

According to him, achieving meaningful digital transformation requires more than ambition.

“Powering Nigeria’s digital future requires more than vision. It requires infrastructure, innovation, collaboration and institutions capable of delivering services at scale,” he said.

The SGF commended Galaxy Backbone for supporting Ministries, Departments and Agencies through shared digital services and national digital infrastructure, describing the organisation as a trusted partner in government digitalisation efforts.

He also urged state governments, ICT agencies and public institutions to take advantage of existing digital infrastructure and partnerships to improve governance and service delivery.

“The digital infrastructure already exists. The expertise exists. The partnerships exist. What is required is greater collaboration, stronger adoption, and a shared commitment to accelerating digital transformation at every level of government,” Akume said.

He further praised the management and staff of Galaxy Backbone for their contributions to the organisation’s growth and expressed confidence that its next phase of development would deliver even greater impact.

Akume added that the summit would help shape the policies, partnerships and ideas needed to build a more connected, innovative and competitive economy.

According to him, digital technology remains central to Nigeria’s quest for sustainable development and improved service delivery for citizens.
