Nigeria's female national team climbs to 36th globally in new FIFA standings, retaining continental supremacy

The Super Falcons of Nigeria have achieved a notable rise in the latest FIFA women’s world rankings, moving up one spot to 36th place, thereby solidifying their position as the top-ranked team in Africa.

This advancement comes despite the team's absence from one of the international break windows under review, with their global ranking improving from 37th place in the December 2025 ranking.

The Falcons had skipped the last women’s international break slot, which was scheduled for mid-April, but their ranking was influenced by two pre-WAFCON double-header friendly matches against Cameroon.

These matches, which took place in February and March 2026, saw the Falcons first lose 1–0, then secure a 3–1 victory, resulting in a gain of 3.35 points to reach 1602 points in April.

Although this is still short of the 1607 points recorded in December 2025, the team's position has improved, with South Africa, Ghana, and Morocco trailing behind as the next highest-ranked African teams in 58th, 59th, and 62nd place globally.

On the global stage, Spain retains its top spot, followed closely by the USA, while England has nudged Germany out of third place.

Japan has made a significant leap, surpassing Sweden, France, and Brazil to claim fifth place in the rankings.

The next update to the FIFA women’s ranking is set to be released on June 16.
