Nigeria's electoral body sets June 20 as date for Rivers South-East Senatorial district by-election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled its intention to hold a by-election for the Rivers South-East Senatorial District seat, which is currently vacant, on June 20.

Johnson Alalibo, the Resident Electoral Commissioner in Rivers State, disclosed this information through a statement released to journalists on Thursday in Port Harcourt.

According to Alalibo, the by-election will take place within a specific timeframe, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and will be conducted across multiple locations.

The exercise will span 88 registration areas/wards and 1,629 polling units, covering the entirety of the seven local government areas that comprise the senatorial district.

The local government areas affected by the by-election are Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro, Eleme, Tai, Oyigbo, Khana, and Gokana, all of which will be involved in the electoral process.

Johnson Alalibo assured residents and stakeholders that the commission is dedicated to ensuring the by-election is conducted in a manner that is free, fair, and credible.

Additionally, the REC encouraged eligible voters within the senatorial district to participate in the electoral process peacefully, emphasizing the importance of a calm and orderly environment for the by-election.
