Nigeria's economic rebalancing a boon for companies, says Jumia's chief executive

Francis Dufay, Chief Executive Officer of Jumia Group, presented a viewpoint that positions Nigeria as a hub of reform, growth, and stability, rather than a nation on the periphery of risk.
nDufay shared his insights during a panel discussion on emerging markets at the Sohn Conference in New York, where he reflected on the economic challenges faced by African markets, including Nigeria, between 2021 and 2024.
nThis period was marked by sharp currency fluctuations, decreased consumer purchasing power, and inflation, resulting in a difficult operating environment, particularly for sectors dependent on imports, logistics, payments, and retail demand.
nCompanies like Jumia, which rely on pricing stability, inventory planning, and payment predictability, were severely tested by the economic volatility, but Dufay argued that the pressure prompted structural responses.
nAccording to Dufay, Nigeria's reform trajectory, especially under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu, signals the beginning of a new macro-cycle, with measures such as exchange rate unification, fiscal adjustments, and economic restructuring contributing to a more transparent and stable business environment.
nDufay cited Nigeria as a prime example of reform in action, noting that the country was in a challenging situation three or four years ago, but recent policy changes are now laying the groundwork for greater stability.
nThe newfound stability is expected to have a direct impact on e-commerce and digital platforms, leading to improved pricing models, enhanced supplier relationships, stronger payment flows, and renewed investor confidence.
