Nigeria's Anambra State Sees Eight Alleged Impostor Clergymen Charged With Violating Regulations

In Anambra State, eight individuals suspected of posing as fake pastors have been taken to the State High Court in Awka to face charges related to alleged breaches of the 2025 Homeland Security Law, which was recently enacted by the state House of Assembly.

The defendants in the case are Peter Chukwu, Chinedu Egwuonwu, Emeka Nwankpa, Ebele Nnachukwu, Ekeleme Chris Ugochukwu, Ndubisi Nnachukwu, Miracle Iruoma, and Chukwukadibia Ogwuama, all of whom are accused of violating the law.

Most of the suspects were apprehended in Onitsha and Awka, while the remaining individuals were arrested in other parts of the state during enforcement operations conducted by the authorities.

The state security outfit, Agunechemba, led by Prince Ken Emeakayi, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Homeland Security, brought the defendants before the court on Friday.

The prosecution is being led by the state Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke (SAN), who will argue the case against the suspected fake pastors.

The 2025 Homeland Security Law specifically prohibits certain religious practices that are deemed to promote false or misleading claims, including get-rich-quick preaching, and the suspects are being prosecuted for alleged violations of this law.

According to the authorities, the suspects are being held accountable for their alleged breaches of the law, which is part of a broader effort to crack down on fraudulent activities in the state.

In a similar case last year, native doctors accused of promoting similar practices were arrested, resulting in one conviction and jail sentence, while others remain in detention awaiting trial.
