Nigerians could push for Tinubu to stay in office longer, says Oluwo

Nigerians may ultimately demand a constitutional amendment to permit President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to serve beyond the two-term limit, according to the Oluwo of Iwo, Abdulrosheed Akanbi, who made this assertion in a birthday message congratulating the president on his 74th birthday.

Akanbi, in a statement released by his spokesperson, Ibrahim Alli, described Tinubu as a leader with a clear vision, whose policies are starting to produce tangible results, prompting speculation that many Nigerians may advocate for a constitutional review to allow him to remain in office for more than two terms.

The monarch credited Tinubu's administration with implementing crucial economic reforms, which have begun to stabilise key economic indicators, citing policies such as exchange rate unification, increased oil production, and rising foreign investment as key contributors to the economic upturn.

Notably, Akanbi highlighted the significant increase in Nigeria's foreign reserves, which have grown from approximately $1 billion to between $49.5 billion and $50.45 billion as of late February and March 2026, a development he attributed to Tinubu's leadership and reform efforts.

Akanbi also commended the president's commitment to governance reforms, including local government autonomy, which he believes has bolstered grassroots administration and improved allocations to states, in addition to praising ongoing infrastructure projects such as the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road and the Sokoto-Badagry Road.

Emphasising the value of resolute decision-making, Akanbi stated that true leadership is demonstrated by the ability to take firm decisions and stand by them, a trait he believes Tinubu has consistently exhibited, particularly in the face of public pressure.

In contrast to past leaders who have hesitated in the face of opposition, Tinubu has shown unwavering resolve in implementing difficult policies, prompting Akanbi to express optimism that the administration's next phase will yield greater economic stability and improved living standards for Nigerians.
