Nigerian Medical Association obtains temporary release for Professor Martin Aghaji following detention by Department of State Services on suspicion of financial misconduct

The Nigerian Medical Association has successfully secured the release on bail of Prof. Martin Aghaji, a renowned consultant cardiac surgeon, following his arrest and detention by the Department of State Services over an alleged economic crime.

Prof. Aghaji was taken into custody at his Enugu residence on Thursday, July 2, 2026, by the Enugu State Command of the DSS, and was subsequently transferred to the Lagos State Command, where he was held as investigations continued.

The Chairman of the NMA Lagos State branch, Dr. Babajide Kehinde Saheed, revealed that the association intervened in the matter after being informed of the arrest by the Director of the DSS Lagos State Command.

Dr. Saheed stated that he was personally contacted by the Director, DSS Lagos State Command, who notified him of Prof. Aghaji's arrest, prompting him to inform the Chairman of the NMA Enugu State and the national NMA.

Upon notification, the NMA formed a delegation to engage with the DSS Lagos Command and ensure proper representation for the medical practitioner, comprising Prof. Olayinka Atilola, Dr. Babajide Saheed, Dr. Bisoye Akinsulire, and Dr. Placid Ajachukwu.

This team, acting on behalf of the National Officers Committee led by Prof. Afekhide Omoti, visited the DSS Lagos Command on Sunday, July 5, 2026, where they facilitated the completion of the bail process for Prof. Aghaji.

Prof. Martin Aghaji was released on bail to the NMA team on liberal terms without any pressure, with the bail process being perfected by the team, according to the NMA.

The association noted that details of the allegations against the surgeon remain confidential, as investigations by the security agency are still ongoing, stating that "the details of the alleged economic crime offence and other information remain classified to protect ongoing investigations".

The release of Prof. Aghaji on bail does not mark the end of the matter, as the DSS is expected to continue its investigation into the allegations.

The NMA stated that it will continue to monitor developments while maintaining engagement with relevant authorities to ensure that due process is followed.
