Nigerian Football Federation Offers Regret to President Tinubu and the Nation Following WAFCON Disappointment

The Nigeria Football Federation has formally apologized to the Federal Government and the people of Nigeria for the Super Falcons' failure to secure direct qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau expressed deep regret over the result on behalf of the NFF Executive Committee, the Super Falcons, and the entire Nigerian football family, acknowledging the disappointment this has caused millions of Nigerians who support the team.

Gusau stated that the team carried the hopes of the nation and the goodwill of the Federal Government into the competition, and regretted not delivering the expected result at this stage, causing disappointment to the millions of Nigerians who passionately support the Super Falcons.

The NFF extended a special apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, recognizing his strong support for Nigerian sports and women athletes, and noting his exceptional commitment to the development and welfare of women in sports.

The statement highlighted the substantial rewards and support given to the Super Falcons after their previous WAFCON triumph, as well as continued support for the Super Eagles, and acknowledged that the team has not been able to repay that confidence with the outcome expected at this stage.

The federation apologized to the National Assembly, the National Sports Commission, sponsors, stakeholders, and Nigerian supporters at home and abroad, taking responsibility for the setback and expressing genuine humility and regret.

A pathway remains open for the Super Falcons through the CAF play-offs for two tickets, followed by the FIFA play-off tournament, and the NFF said they must now regroup, learn from the setback, and focus on this opportunity.

Gusau emphasized that the NFF, technical team, and players are committed to doing everything possible to secure Nigeria’s place at the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and the federation pledged an honest assessment of preparation, technical planning, logistics, and overall operations to identify areas for improvement.

The NFF accepted responsibility for the disappointment, shared the feelings of Nigerians, and assured that they are not giving up, resolving to ensure the Super Falcons return stronger and fight harder to make Nigerians proud once again.
