Nigerian Correctional Service cautions prisoners against attempted breakouts, implements mandatory savings scheme

The Controller General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Nwakuche, cautioned inmates against attempting to escape while unveiling a savings plan linked to their participation in agricultural activities.

This warning was issued on Friday at the Dukpa Farm Centre in Gwagwalada, Abuja, as Nwakuche addressed inmates during the launch of the 2026 farming season.

The Nigerian Correctional Service's farming programme is part of broader reforms aimed at promoting rehabilitation through skill acquisition, enhancing economic empowerment of inmates, and contributing to national food security, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.

Nwakuche stated that the farming programme is designed to equip inmates with practical skills, enabling them to become productive members of society upon their release.

The Controller General revealed that a system is being implemented to ensure inmates benefit financially from their work through compulsory savings, allowing them to accumulate funds while participating in the programme.

Nwakuche emphasized that the primary goal of the programme is to teach inmates a valuable skill, enabling them to contribute positively to society after their release, and assured them that the Service would provide support and encouragement.

The Controller General explained that a percentage of the inmates' earnings from the farm would be set aside as savings, providing them with a financial safety net upon their release.

This measure aims to strengthen reintegration efforts by ensuring inmates leave custody with both skills and financial support, according to Nwakuche.

However, Nwakuche warned that any involvement in escape plans would result in severe consequences, including the loss of privileges and possible re-prosecution.

Nwakuche urged inmates to cooperate with authorities and refrain from planning escapes, cautioning that such actions would lead to the removal of remission and potential further jail time.

The Controller General reminded inmates that their selection for the farm centre was based on their good conduct and trust, and warned them against abusing this privilege.

Nwakuche encouraged inmates to remain disciplined, focused, and committed to the training, assuring them of the Service's support and wishing them well.
