Nigerian city greets teenage cyclist with autism on long-distance biking challenge

Lagos State Government extended a warm welcome to 16-year-old autistic cyclist Kanyeyachukwu Tagbo-Okeke on his arrival in the state as part of his endurance cycling journey, which began in Enugu State.

He was accompanied by his parents, members of the Kanyeyachukwu Autism Foundation, cycling officials, and a medical support team, and the group was received by Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development Mobolaji Ogunlende, marking the completion of the Enugu-Anambra-Lagos endurance route.

Commissioner Ogunlende praised the cyclist's courage and determination, describing the visit as "both inspiring and symbolic", and also commended Kanyeyachukwu's resilience and his parents' dedication.

The commissioner further applauded the journey as a powerful statement on inclusion and disability awareness, highlighting the importance of promoting acceptance and appreciation of autistic individuals.

Kanyeyachukwu expressed his gratitude to the Lagos State Government for the warm reception, describing it as compassionate and highly commendable.

A formal reception for the team is scheduled to take place at the State House on Thursday, where Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu will receive them.

The event is part of the activities marking World Autism Awareness Day, which is observed globally on April 2 under the United Nations framework.

The global observance promotes acceptance, inclusion, and appreciation of autistic individuals, while highlighting their social, educational, and economic contributions worldwide.
