Nigeria Union of Teachers orders educators in Oyo to embark on open-ended work stoppage in protest of kidnapped students and staff

The Nigeria Union of Teachers has issued a directive to all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State, instructing them to embark on an indefinite strike from Monday, June 1, 2026, in response to the ongoing abduction of teachers and pupils in the state.

This move is aimed at prompting the government to take immediate action to secure the release of the abducted individuals, whose whereabouts remain unknown, according to the union's leadership.

The directive was issued in a statement signed by Hassan Fatai, Chairman of the NUT Oyo State Wing, and Salami Olukayode, the union's Secretary, which highlighted the prolonged captivity of the abductees as a major concern.

The prolonged abduction has sparked fear and anxiety among teachers, disrupted confidence in the school system, and discouraged parents from sending their children to school, the union noted.

The situation has also led to heightened tension within affected communities, further emphasizing the need for urgent government intervention, the NUT stated.

The strike is intended to draw the attention of government authorities to the need for intensified efforts to secure the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted teachers and pupils, the union explained.
