NEMA mobilises for arrival of evacuees from South Africa

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has activated comprehensive reception arrangements for Nigerian citizens being evacuated from the Republic of South Africa ahead of their arrival in the country.

NEMA Director-General, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has deployed the agency’s response team to the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, to work with relevant government agencies in receiving and supporting the returnees.

According to the agency, the first batch of evacuees is scheduled to depart O.R. Tambo International Airport, Johannesburg, on Wednesday night and is expected to arrive in Lagos in the early hours of Thursday, June 11, 2026.

The agency said the activation of the reception framework reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring the safe return, welfare, and reintegration of Nigerians coming back from South Africa.

Officials added that logistics and support systems have been put in place to ensure a smooth reception process at the airport upon arrival.

The development comes as authorities continue efforts to assist Nigerians affected by circumstances that necessitated their evacuation from the country.
