Ndume Advises Tinubu to Focus on National Safety, Disregard Defecting Lawmakers

Sensor Ali Ndume has advised President Bola Tinubu to maintain his focus on the welfare and security of Nigerians, rather than being swayed by the defection of politicians from one party to another, as the electorates remain committed to their chosen parties.

Speaking on Channels TV, Ndume, who represents Borno State in the National Assembly, emphasized that the government's priority should be to ensure the safety and well-being of citizens, rather than being concerned about political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 elections.

Ndume highlighted the ongoing challenges in the fight against insurgency, citing significant gaps in the military's preparedness, including the lack of proper surveillance, night vision equipment, and armoured vehicles, which exposes soldiers to attacks.

The senator noted that task force battalions are often deployed without the necessary support, and the military lacks standby helicopters in strategic areas, compromising their ability to protect Nigerians from insurgent attacks.

Despite commending President Tinubu's commitment to security, Ndume stressed that success in this area requires the full support and engagement of all government quarters, adding that the President cannot tackle the issue alone.

Ndume suggested that the President should create a situation room to receive daily briefings and ensure that his team is fully engaged in addressing the security concerns of Nigerians.

The senator expressed support for the Chief of Defence Staff's call for local communities to take ownership of security, noting that most insurgents in his local government area originate from the community itself.

Ndume argued that if communities are equipped and empowered to protect themselves, the number of attacks will significantly decrease, emphasizing that security is not solely the responsibility of the government.

Regarding the performance of the ruling party, Ndume acknowledged shortcomings, urging a focus on action rather than placing blame, and emphasizing that soldiers must be properly equipped and promises must be translated into tangible protection for citizens.

Looking ahead to the 2027 elections, Ndume stressed that Nigerians' confidence in the government will depend on tangible improvements in security and welfare, adding that if the President delivers on his promises, opposition campaigns will have little impact.

According to Ndume, the key to success lies in the government's ability to demonstrate its commitment to the safety and well-being of Nigerians, as this will ultimately determine the outcome of the elections.
