Nationwide Lunar Observation Ordered by Sultan as Ramadan Draws to a Close

Muslims across Nigeria have been urged by Sultan of Sokoto Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, who also serves as the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, to commence the search for the Shawwal crescent, marking the end of Ramadan 1447AH and the start of Eid celebrations.

The call to action was made in a statement issued by the Sultanate Council Sokoto, signed by Sambo Wali Junaidu, the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, which corresponds to the 29th day of Ramadan 1447AH.

This specific date has been designated for the nationwide moon sighting, with the Sultan encouraging Muslims to be on the lookout for the new crescent and report any credible sightings through traditional and official channels.

Those who observe the moon are advised to inform their nearest district or village head, who will then relay the information to the Sultan for confirmation and formal announcement, ensuring a streamlined reporting process.

To facilitate coordination and accuracy, the Sultanate Council has released dedicated telephone lines for direct reporting of verified sightings, including 0803 715 7100, 0806 630 3077, 0803 596 5322, 0803 594 5903, and 0706 714 6900.

The announcement is in line with longstanding Islamic tradition, where the sighting of the Shawwal crescent determines the conclusion of the fasting period and the beginning of Eid al-Fitr, a significant religious celebration observed by Muslims nationwide.
