N33.8bn Scam Case: Ex-Minister's Fate to be Decided by Court on June 9

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Maitama, Abuja, has scheduled June 9, 2026, as the date for delivering judgment in the ongoing trial of former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, who is accused of fraud.

Mamman is facing a 12-count charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which alleges conspiracy to commit money laundering involving a massive sum of N33,804,830,503.73.

During Thursday's court proceedings, Femi Atteh, the defence counsel, informed the court that the defence team had submitted its final written address on April 1, 2026, accompanied by a response to the prosecution's submissions.

Atteh asserted that the defence is relying on these filings and urged the court to acquit the defendant, while prosecution counsel Rotimi Oyedepo countered by stating that the prosecution had filed its final written address on April 14, 2026.

Oyedepo requested the court to convict Mamman on all counts, emphasizing that the crucial aspect of the case is the transfer of funds from a government account to a Bureau de Change (BDC) account.

Oyedepo pointed out that witnesses have established a link between the funds and the defendant, and that the BDC operator had testified to receiving the money and subsequently delivering it to the defendant's residence.

A boy who worked for the defendant also testified about receiving some of the funds on the defendant's instructions, according to Oyedepo, who argued that the evidence presented is clear and convincing.

Oyedepo urged the court to disregard the defence's arguments and find the former minister guilty, and after hearing both sides, Justice Omotosho adjourned the case until June 9, 2026, for judgment.
