Mob lynches two travellers in Kaduna, six arrested

KADUNA — The Kaduna State Police Command has arrested six suspects over the mob killing of two travellers at Gidan Kalu Village in Birnin Yero, near Maraban Jos.

The victims, identified as Muhammadu Sani, 45, and Aliyu Mohammed, 40, both from Umar Village in Igabi Local Government Area, were reportedly travelling on a motorcycle to Tudun Wada, Zaria, to visit a sick relative when the incident occurred on July 1, 2026.

According to the police, residents became suspicious after seeing the pair riding a new motorcycle and raised an alarm, accusing them of being thieves.

The victims reportedly abandoned the motorcycle and fled, but were chased by a mob, which caught up with them and beat them to death despite their pleas of innocence.

Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, said operatives from the Birnin Yero Division responded to the incident and arrested Abdullahi Mukailu Kigo and five other suspects.

He said the suspects are in police custody, while investigations continue and efforts are ongoing to identify and arrest other persons involved in the attack.

The Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, condemned the killing, describing it as barbaric and unlawful.

He vowed that everyone found culpable would be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The commissioner also warned residents against taking the law into their own hands, stressing that mob action is a criminal offence.

He urged members of the public to report suspected criminals to the police or other security agencies for investigation and lawful prosecution, reiterating that every suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court of competent jurisdiction.
