Mixed accounts emerge after Sokoto bandit attack, locals refute reports of widespread displacement

Conflicting reports have surfaced regarding a recent bandit attack on the Bargaja community in Sokoto State's Isa Local Government Area, with residents disputing claims that the town has been abandoned due to insecurity.

A resident, who chose to remain anonymous, revealed that while the attack sparked panic and prompted some families to temporarily relocate, the situation was not as dire as reported in some media outlets and social media videos suggesting a mass exodus.

The resident explained that the movement of people out of the town was limited and largely precautionary, adding that the presence of security personnel, including Nigerian Army troops and other operatives, reassured many residents and led several families to reconsider their decision to leave.

According to the resident, the intensified patrols and presence of security operatives in the area prompted many residents to stay, with some people initially relocating out of fear but later deciding to remain in the community.

Public affairs commentator Malam Altine Guyawa confirmed that bandits attacked the community on Saturday, triggering apprehension among residents, and noted that local vigilantes and residents have historically resisted such attacks with the support of security agencies.

Guyawa added that the presence of additional security operatives strengthened local defensive efforts and helped restore confidence among residents, who have experienced sporadic bandit incursions in the past, often resulting in clashes between armed groups and local defenders supported by security personnel.

A community source confirmed that Bargaja has experienced repeated bandit attacks, which have occasionally led to casualties on both sides and heightened fear among villagers, but the presence of security personnel has helped to deter such attacks.

A security source disclosed that military troops recently deployed to the area engaged a group of armed bandits who attempted to launch an attack on Bargaja and nearby settlements, successfully repelling the assailants and preventing further escalation.

The security source stated that the troops' rapid response demonstrated the effectiveness and proactiveness of the Nigerian Army in deterring attacks, and the situation is currently stable and under control.

Following consultations between community leaders and security authorities, many residents who had initially planned to relocate chose to remain in the town, with images circulating online likely reflecting only a small number of those who temporarily moved.

The Sokoto State Police Command is monitoring developments and conducting investigations into the incident, with spokesperson Ahmad Rufa'i assuring that authorities will provide further clarification after reviewing available information.

Separate media reports indicated that at least two people were killed during the attack, while some residents fled to neighbouring communities and the Sokoto metropolis for safety, with the attackers storming the village around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday.

Security analyst Bashiru Altine Giyawa confirmed the incident, stating that Bargaja has long been known for resisting repeated attacks by bandits believed to be linked to notorious gang leader Bello Turji, and members of the local vigilante group engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle.

The vigilante group confronted the bandits in a fierce exchange of gunfire, resulting in the deaths of two vigilantes, Umaru Biri and Garba Mumminu, who reportedly died from gunshot wounds sustained during the clash.

Residents claimed that several bandits were killed during the gun duel, though their bodies were allegedly taken away by their accomplices into nearby forest hideouts, and eyewitnesses described the atmosphere in the eastern Sokoto community as tense.

Persistent attacks linked to criminal networks operating in the region have continued to cause deaths and displacement across parts of northwestern Nigeria, but security authorities maintain that efforts are ongoing to stabilise the area and reassure residents of their safety.
