Minister Lai Mohammed praises President Buhari's honesty and empathy

Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the former Minister of Information and Culture, has paid tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader who embodied patriotism, compassion, and incorruptibility, during a commemorative event in Abuja marking the first anniversary of his passing.

Mohammed's remarks, as contained in a statement released by Nnamdi Atupulazi, the Head of Strategic Communication at the Lai Mohammed Media Office, highlighted Buhari's legacy as one defined by integrity, humility, patriotism, humanity, and confidence in those who served under him.

The former minister noted that Buhari's illustrious career spanned both military and democratic leadership, ultimately culminating in two terms as Nigeria's democratically elected president, a testament to his enduring impact on the nation.

Mohammed fondly recalled Buhari's consistent displays of concern for his well-being during his tenure as government spokesman, often inquiring about his ability to cope with the demands of the office, demonstrating a unique level of empathy and care.

A notable instance of Buhari's trust in his subordinates was his prompt approval of a 2015 media tour of liberated communities in Borno, which Mohammed described as a remarkable demonstration of faith in his abilities.

Furthermore, Mohammed revealed that Buhari had also cleared him of wrongdoing after conducting a discreet investigation into allegations contained in a petition against him, showcasing his commitment to fairness and justice.

Buhari's unwavering dedication to Nigeria's unity was also underscored by Mohammed, who remembered the former president's unrelenting efforts to preserve the country's indivisibility throughout his military and civilian leadership tenure.

Contrary to his public image as a stern military officer, Mohammed portrayed Buhari as a warm, humble, and humorous individual, citing his patience, fairness, and willingness to assist others, including former Head of State Gen. Yakubu Gowon, as evidence of his compassionate nature.

Mohammed's relationship with Buhari extended beyond the former president's tenure, with regular visits to his residences in Daura and Kaduna, a testament to the strong bond they shared.

In his tribute, Mohammed prayed for Allah to forgive Buhari's shortcomings, grant him Aljannah Firdaus, and comfort his family, while also blessing Nigeria with peace, unity, and prosperity.

The former President passed away on July 13, 2025, at the age of 82, in a London hospital, following a prolonged illness, prompting nationwide mourning and an outpouring of tributes to his decades of public service.

He was laid to rest on July 15, 2025, at his Daura residence in Katsina State, in accordance with Islamic rites and with full military honours, attended by President Bola Tinubu and other dignitaries.
