Military sets sights on homegrown solutions to tackle rising instability

The Nigerian Army says it will harness the power of indigenous innovation in the campaign against insecurity in some parts of the country.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu made the expression at the opening of the Nigerian Army Combat Support Arms Training Week 2026, in Uyo on Tuesday.

Represented by Maj.-Gen. Adewale Adekeye, the Chief of Personnel Management, Shaibu, said the event was meant to strengthen personnel’s combat readiness.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the event is: “Strengthening Combat Support Arms Adaptability and Resilience Through Indigenous Innovations for Integrated Operational Support Within a Joint and Multi-Agency Framework”

He said that the army was committed to using indigenous innovations to fight insurgency and other violent crimes in the country.

The army chief thanked President Bola Tinubu for being ‘strategically committed’ to the provision of logistics and promotion of personnel welfare.

The Chief of Army Staff charged the officers to always adhere to the rules of engagement in order to ensure the safety of Nigerians.

He commended the Akwa Ibom Government for hosting the event, and described the hospitality and planning as ‘superb’

Gov. Umo Eno described security as the foundation for sustainable progress and development of every nation.

Represented by Capt. Iniobong Ekong (Rtd), the Commissioner for Trade and Investment, Eno, stated that the military had continued to play a significant role in maintaining the country’s unity.

He commended the army for emphasising the use of an indigenous approach to tackle insecurity, saying, “This is timely and well-intended”

The governor assured the army of the state government’s continued support for the campaign against insecurity.

Eno urged the participants to take advantage of the training to improve themselves and contribute to the army’s progress.
