Military Cracks Down on IPOB/ESN Hideouts, Dismantles Kidnapping Ring; Seizes Explosives, Large Sum of Money

Troops from the Nigerian Army, operating under the umbrella of Operation Eastern Sanity, have carried out a sweeping raid across the South-East, successfully overpowering strongholds of the IPOB/ESN.

This military operation was facilitated by the relentless pressure exerted by the troops, who leveraged their superior firepower, intelligence, and synergistic joint-force efforts to expose the weakening structure of the group and its inability to withstand sustained military action.

On 14 April 2026, a precision strike and clearance operation was launched by joint troops of Sector 1, with support from the Air Component of Operation Udoka, targeting the Ajali Forest in the Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The offensive resulted in the chaotic retreat of IPOB/ESN elements, who abandoned crucial assets, including an anti-tank Improvised Explosive Device (IED), in their haste to escape.

The failed attempt to deploy the IED highlights the desperation and declining operational competence of the group, as the device was safely secured by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Security team, thereby preventing potential harm to troops and civilians.

Troops have since established firm control over the area, maintaining aggressive clearance operations and systematically dismantling all terrorist infrastructure, while also destroying hideouts using chainsaws and bulldozers to strip the criminals of cover.

This deliberate destruction of hideouts has left the criminals exposed, scattered, and unable to regroup or mount any meaningful resistance, significantly undermining their capabilities.

In a related operation on the same day, troops of 82 Division Garrison, deployed at Adani in Uzo-Uwani LGA, conducted an intelligence-driven raid, tracking and intercepting ransom proceeds linked to a kidnapping syndicate, based on credible intelligence from the Department of State Services.

The swift raid led to the arrest of a notorious kidnap suspect, further exposing the group's reliance on criminality to sustain its collapsing network, and exploitation of the area resulted in the recovery of a pump-action rifle and the sum of Two Million Naira (₦2,000,000), believed to be ransom funds, from the suspect's residence.

The suspect and recovered items have been handed over to the appropriate authorities for a thorough investigation to track other members of the criminal gang, with the aim of dismantling the entire network.

The operation has further degraded the IPOB/ESN's operational and financial capacity, demonstrating the group's steady loss of ground, resources, and cohesion under sustained military pressure.
