Meta made a significant move on Wednesday by introducing paid subscription plans for its main applications, a strategic effort to reduce dependence on advertising revenue that has been its primary source of income for a long time.

n

This development was announced by Naomi Gleit, Meta's head of product, through a video posted on Instagram, where she revealed the global launch of Facebook Plus, Instagram Plus, and WhatsApp Plus, with additional plans underway for businesses, content creators, and artificial intelligence products.

n

The launch of these paid plans comes at a time when Meta is facing intense scrutiny from investors due to its substantial spending on artificial intelligence, with projected capital expenditures of $125 billion to $145 billion for the current year, primarily allocated to AI data centers.

n

Following the announcement, Meta's stock price experienced a nearly three percent increase, indicating a positive market response to the company's diversification efforts.

n

The pricing for Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus has been set at $3.99 per month, while WhatsApp Plus will be available for $2.99 per month, according to reports, offering users a range of premium features and services.

n

Specifically, Instagram Plus and Facebook Plus will provide users with enhanced analytics, story rewatch statistics, broader audience reach, and profile customization options, among other features, while WhatsApp Plus will focus on personalization elements such as premium stickers, custom ringtones, and app themes.

n

Naomi Gleit stated that the company's long-term plan is to consolidate its various offerings under a single brand, known as Meta One, streamlining its services and providing a unified experience for users.

n

Notably, Meta had previously launched ad-free, paid versions of Facebook and Instagram in Europe during 2023, in compliance with EU data privacy regulations, giving users the option to choose between a free, ad-supported experience or a paid, ad-free alternative.
