Mayweather-Pacquiao sequel put on hold with no new date set

A highly anticipated rematch between boxing legends Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao has been postponed indefinitely, according to Pacquiao's camp in the Philippines, which made the announcement on Friday.

This development came after ESPN reported that a planned Mayweather exhibition in Greece had been cancelled, following an events company connected to the Pacquiao bout seeking an injunction, further complicating the already uncertain situation.

The two boxing hall of famers, who drew 4.6 million pay-per-view buys in their 2015 bout, have been at odds since Mayweather announced that the rematch, initially scheduled for September and announced by Netflix, would only be an exhibition, a claim bitterly disputed by Pacquiao.

Pacquiao's camp released a statement on Friday, blaming the postponement on a combination of federal lawsuits, scheduling conflicts, and financial issues surrounding the Mayweather camp, which have created a volatile situation.

Events company CSI had sued Mayweather the previous week, seeking to recover at least $4.65 million, which the company claims it paid for exclusive rights to promote the Pacquiao rematch and a failed exhibition bout with former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.

According to Friday's statement, the earliest possible date for the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight would now be early 2027, pending resolution of the ongoing disputes.

The Pacquiao team's statement also mentioned that should Mayweather and CSI settle their internal contract disputes out of court, promoters would immediately focus on rescheduling a postponed exhibition between Mayweather and Mike Tyson, with a tentative target date of September 12.

Floyd Mayweather, 49, had retired from boxing in 2017 with a perfect 50-0 record, and was initially scheduled to fight an exhibition against Greek kickboxing star Mike Zambidis on Saturday in a pay-per-view event at the Telekon Center at the OAKA Olympic Complex in Athens.

The now-postponed Pacquiao bout would have marked a rematch of the top-grossing boxing event in history, making its postponement a significant development in the boxing world.
