It is about equity, accountability, political responsibility and the sincerity of the development agenda of the NDDC.rnrnIf the Commission has the responsibility of driving development across the Niger Delta, the family wants to know why a project that has allegedly remained outstanding for more than a decade has not received the attention it deserves.rnrnLET THE NDDC EXPLAINrnrnThe family also says it has written several letters seeking an audience with the Managing Director of the NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, to discuss the situation.rnrnAccording to the family, those efforts have so far not produced the desired response.rnrnThis has heightened the family’s frustration and raised questions about the accessibility of the Commission to communities seeking intervention on long-standing development concerns.rnrnThe family is therefore challenging the NDDC to explain the current status of the Okoroba–Opume Road project.rnrnIs the project still alive?rnrnWhat funds have been appropriated for it?rnrnWhat has been done since 2012?rnrnWhen will the people of Okoroba and Opume see meaningful progress?rnrnThese are questions that, in the interest of transparency, deserve clear answers from the Commission.rnrnORONTO’S LEGACY AT STAKErnrnThe significance of the controversy cannot be separated from the legacy of Oronto Douglas himself.rnrnDuring his lifetime, Douglas was one of the prominent voices advocating for environmental justice, human rights and sustainable development in the Niger Delta. He took the concerns of the region beyond Nigeria, including to international platforms, drawing attention to the environmental and developmental challenges confronting Niger Delta communities.rnrnFor his family, therefore, keeping a prestigious award in his honour while remaining silent over what it considers the neglect of his community would create a painful contradiction.rnrnThe proposed return of the award, the family insists, would not amount to disrespect for the NDDC or a rejection of the honour bestowed on their late brother.rnrnRather, it would be a peaceful and symbolic protest intended to draw attention to the very issues for which Oronto Douglas dedicated much of his life.rnrnA POLITICAL MESSAGE TO THE NIGER DELTArnrnThe development could also resonate beyond Okoroba.rnrnAcross the Niger Delta, communities have repeatedly demanded that development interventions be translated from budgetary allocations and official pronouncements into completed projects that directly improve the lives of ordinary people.rnrnAn award ceremony can celebrate history, but roads, schools, hospitals, water projects and other infrastructure are what communities experience as development.rnrnThe Douglas family’s position therefore presents the NDDC with an opportunity to demonstrate that the recognition of Niger Delta heroes is accompanied by a genuine commitment to the communities they represented.rnrnThe issue is not whether Oronto Douglas deserved the award.rnrnThe issue is whether the values for which he was honoured are being reflected in the treatment of the people he spent his life defending.rnrnENGAGEMENT OR RETURN OF THE AWARD?rnrnThe family is now considering whether to continue engaging the NDDC or proceed with the return of the award as a formal statement of protest.rnrnWhatever decision is eventually taken, the matter has placed the Okoroba–Opume Road firmly back in the public conversation.rnrnThe NDDC now has an opportunity to respond to the concerns raised by the Douglas family, clarify the status of the project and demonstrate its commitment to completing projects that have remained outstanding for years.rnrnFor the Douglas family, however, the message is unmistakable:rnrnAn award cannot substitute for development.
