Man claims he was coerced into split, petitions Islamic tribunal to reunite with former spouse

Auwal Musa, a 40-year-old businessman from Kaduna State, has petitioned a Sharia Court in Magajin Gari, requesting an order that would force his former wife, Hauwa, to return to their marital residence, citing that he had divorced her under pressure.

Musa claimed that although he initially pronounced a single divorce, he later attempted to revoke it before Hauwa's iddah period expired, but she declined to reconcile, and he asserted that he had signed the divorce papers while being coerced.

According to Musa, he had made an effort to cancel the divorce before Hauwa completed her iddah, but she refused to return, and he also accused her of taking several household items and personal belongings when she left their home.

The items Musa claimed Hauwa took include a television set, a gas cylinder, an electric kettle, two caps, and documents belonging to his father, and he urged the court to instruct her to return these items.

Hauwa countered Musa's claims by stating that his attempt to reconcile came after she had completed her iddah, rendering his effort to revoke the divorce ineffective, and she admitted taking some of the items listed by Musa.

Hauwa specified that she had only taken Musa's plasma TV and gas cylinder, which she was holding onto until he paid her the N31,500 he owed her, and she also mentioned that Musa had given her the electric kettle as a gift during their courtship.

Hauwa denied taking the caps and her former husband's father's documents, claiming she had no knowledge of their whereabouts.

After hearing both sides, presiding judge Murtala Nasir postponed the case for further deliberation and advised Musa to conduct a thorough search for the missing documents at his home while the court continued to consider the matter.
