Makinde: PDP unfazed with just two state helmsmen remaining

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has expressed confidence that the current crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party will subside, despite the party's dwindling number of governors, and maintains that members are not unduly concerned about the situation.

Makinde made these remarks on Tuesday in Abuja during an expanded meeting of the party's Board of Trustees, where he described the ongoing defections as a difficult period for the party's leaders, members, and Nigeria's democratic system.

His comments came a day after Dauda Lawal, the governor of Zamfara State, announced his resignation from the PDP, leaving Makinde and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State as the party's only remaining governors.

Notwithstanding this development, Makinde downplayed fears of further defections and expressed optimism that the party will overcome the turmoil, stating that the current challenges are a test of the party's resilience.

Makinde noted that the present period is a challenging time for the PDP, its members, and Nigeria's democracy, and that the party's history will be shaped by the actions of its members during this time.

He emphasized that when the history of the current political climate is written, PDP members who remain loyal will be seen as standing with the people, and that their actions will be recorded as such.

Makinde urged party members to be mindful of the role they play in shaping the party's history, saying that the current period will eventually pass and that their actions will have a lasting impact.

Former Senate President Adolphus Wabara also spoke at the meeting, emphasizing the need for the party to find solutions to its challenges and capitalize on the opportunity presented by a recent Appeal Court judgment to reorganize and adhere to its constitution and the rule of law.

Wabara views the judgment as a directive for the party to "begin again" and work in accordance with its constitution, noting that adhering to the Constitution and the rule of law is essential for the party's success.

The meeting was focused on making serious decisions, with Wabara emphasizing the importance of brevity and adherence to the party's constitution, and that the Board will meet to take its decision after receiving a briefing on the expanded process meeting.
