Maiduguri bombings spark outrage among medical residents, who demand immediate safeguards for healthcare facilities

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has vehemently denounced the devastating multiple bomb explosions that rocked Maiduguri, calling for immediate action to protect healthcare facilities and personnel from harm.

This strong condemnation was expressed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the association's president, Dr Mohammad Suleiman, who characterized the Monday night incident as a tragic and unacceptable event.

The blast, which occurred on Monday, had a widespread impact on various locations in the metropolis, including the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, thereby sparking concerns about the safety of health institutions in areas plagued by conflict.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors was particularly distressed to learn that one of the explosions took place within the premises of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, the largest tertiary health facility in North-East Nigeria.

The association emphasized that hospitals are revered as sanctuaries of healing and life preservation, making it utterly painful and unacceptable to witness such a place being targeted by violent acts.

Fortunately, none of the association's members at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital were harmed during the incident, which brought a sense of relief to the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors.

The association commended the bravery and professionalism displayed by resident doctors, medical and dental students, as well as other healthcare workers, who promptly responded to provide care to the victims of the explosions.

The management of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital also received praise from the association for its swift and effective leadership in handling the emergency situation that unfolded.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors extended its condolences to the government and people of Borno State, as well as to the families of the victims affected by the incident.

The association urged the Federal Government and security agencies to bolster the security architecture surrounding healthcare facilities, particularly in vulnerable and conflict-affected areas, to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors further advocated for enhanced surveillance, increased security presence, and strategic deployment of Explosive Ordnance Disposal units around the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and other critical locations.

The association appealed to the authorities to take proactive measures to prevent future occurrences and ensure the safety of both healthcare workers and patients, while also expressing hope for the quick recovery of the injured and praying for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives in the incident.
