MACBAN chairman’s killing threatens Benue peace efforts — IPCR

The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) has condemned the killing of the Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Benue State Chapter, Ardo Risku Mohammed, describing the incident as a major setback to ongoing peacebuilding efforts in the state.

In a statement signed on Sunday by its Director-General, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu, the Institute said the late MACBAN chairman was widely known for promoting dialogue, reconciliation and peaceful coexistence among the diverse communities in Benue State.

According to the IPCR, Mohammed’s efforts to strengthen understanding and foster cordial relations among different ethnic and religious groups earned him widespread respect across the state.

The Institute described his death as not only a painful loss to his family and the MACBAN community but also a significant setback to efforts aimed at promoting lasting peace in Benue.

“The Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution strongly condemns the tragic killing of the Chairman of MACBAN, Benue State Chapter, Ardo Risku Mohammed, describing the incident as a grievous attack on peace and efforts to foster harmonious coexistence in the state,” the statement said.

It noted that individuals who dedicate their lives to promoting peace and building bridges among communities should be protected, warning that attacks on peace advocates could undermine efforts to achieve lasting stability.

The IPCR also commended security agencies for their reported arrest of about 10 suspects in connection with the killing, describing the development as a positive step toward ensuring accountability.

The Institute urged security agencies to conduct a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation and ensure that anyone found culpable is prosecuted in accordance with the law.

It stressed that accountability and the proper administration of justice are essential to strengthening public confidence and reinforcing the foundations of peace and security.

The IPCR further appealed to community leaders, youth groups, religious leaders and civil society organisations to remain calm and avoid actions capable of escalating tensions.

Reaffirming its commitment to peacebuilding and conflict resolution, the Institute pledged to continue supporting dialogue, mediation and confidence-building initiatives aimed at promoting peaceful coexistence and social cohesion across the country.

It also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the leadership and members of MACBAN, the people of Benue State and all those affected by the incident, while urging Nigerians to remain committed to the pursuit of peace, justice and national unity.
