London Modern Art Show: Ignore Criticisms of Nigeria, Says Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has urged caution against the proliferation of negative comments about Nigeria, instead expressing his faith in the ability of Nigerians to thrive in any environment, a sentiment he conveyed during a reception at Tate Modern in London on Thursday.

This event, organised by the British Government, was part of the activities marking the state visit and served as a celebration of the significant contributions Nigerians are making to the growth and development of their country.

President Tinubu's remarks highlighted the creativity and resilience of Nigerians, who are redefining their past and forging a new path in modern history, as exemplified by the theme of the exhibition, Nigeria's modernism, which he described as a testament to revolution.

The President praised the ingenuity of Nigerians, who have created a lasting legacy through their unique blend of traditional and modern elements, resulting in a timeless and enduring body of work.

President Tinubu also took the opportunity to assure the gathering that Nigeria's economy has emerged from a period of uncertainty and is now poised for a brighter future, one that aligns with the expectations of its citizens.

According to a statement by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu advised against being swayed by negative indices often cited by critics, instead affirming his trust in the capacity of Nigerian citizens to excel in any setting.

UK Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, who hosted the reception, welcomed President Tinubu and the First Lady, emphasizing the strong strategic partnership between the UK and Nigeria, characterized by mutual respect and cooperation.

The UK Deputy Prime Minister noted that the annual trade between the two countries has reached £8.1 billion, with over half a million Nigerians making significant contributions to the UK's cultural and economic landscape.

Mr Lammy also highlighted Nigeria's profound cultural influence globally, spanning art and entertainment, and underscored the ambition and future focus of the UK-Nigeria relationship, as exemplified by the ongoing trade and investment dialogue.

Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, who moderated the event, drew attention to the notable achievements of Nigerians holding important positions in the United Kingdom.

Prominent figures in attendance included the Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the Governor of Ogun State, Dapo Abiodun, as well as several ministers, including Hannatu Musawa, Lateef Fagbemi, and Gen. Christopher Musa.

Other notable attendees included the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole, and the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.

The event was also attended by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency and Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.
