Lobi Stars FC of Makurdi returned to winning ways on Match Day 11 of the 2025/26 Nigeria National League (NNL), defeating ABS Ilorin 2-0 at the McCarthy Stadium.
Head Coach John Onuh, popularly known as Abacha, attributed the victory to his team’s adherence to instructions and tactical discipline.
Speaking to sports journalists, Coach Onuh said, “the boys understood their roles, and it reflected on the pitch.”
The Makurdi-based side came into the encounter determined to bounce back from a disappointing outing in Match Day 10, where they succumbed 0-2 to FC Basira at the Lafia City Stadium. Onuh admitted the previous defeat weighed heavily on the team’s morale.
Despite the victory, the Head Coach acknowledged there were areas that still require improvements along when that is done the team will be rocksolid. “When that is done, I think it will be very difficult for any team to defeat us anywhere,” he added.
The win over ABS Ilorin was characterized by a disciplined defensive display and quick transitions in attack, a style Onuh has been instilling since taking charge of the team.
“I am really proud of how the boys executed our game plan. They were patient, moved the ball well, and never allowed the opposition to settle into their rhythm.”
Onuh also praised the team’s ability to maintain focus throughout the match. “Even when we were leading, they didn’t relax. That level of concentration is what will carry us far this season.”
Looking ahead, the coach expressed his determination to secure the elusive away victory. “I am working hard to get an away victory,” he said.
Even though Lobi Stars managed just a draw in their away match in Sokoto, Onuh remains confident about future games. “God willing, in our next NNL encounter against Mighty Jets FC in Jos, we will turn things around and return with a strong result,” he said.
The victory over ABS Ilorin is said to have lifted Lobi Stars to a more confident position in the league, sending a message to other NNL sides that the Makurdi outfit is serious about reclaiming its winning momentum.
