Liam Rosenior downplays significance of Club World Cup win as Chelsea prepares to face PSG once more

Chelsea's victory in the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 Champions, where they defeated Paris Saint-Germain in the final, will have no impact on their upcoming Champions League match, according to coach Liam Rosenior.

The two teams will meet again in the last 16 of the Champions League on Wednesday, eight months after Chelsea's 3-0 win at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey on July 13, 2025.

Rosenior recalled watching the Club World Cup final from his home in Derby, describing it as a great game between two fantastic teams, and expressed his delight for the team's achievement, without focusing on the presence of US President Donald Trump during the celebrations.

He emphasized that the context of the upcoming match is completely different from the previous one, and therefore, the past result has little relevance today.

Rosenior, who replaced Enzo Maresca as Chelsea boss in January, had the opportunity to visit the Chelsea camp during the Club World Cup and witnessed their training and last-16 win over Benfica.

The 41-year-old coach reflected on the experience, describing the team's trophy win as magnificent and an amazing achievement for the club, and expressed his desire to create more memories like that in the future.

During his 18 months with Strasbourg, Rosenior had success against PSG, beating them at home last season and securing a 3-3 draw at the Parc des Princes in October.

Luis Enrique's PSG have struggled to regain their form from last season, but Rosenior admires the Spanish coach and his team, acknowledging their exceptional performance in winning the Champions League title.

Rosenior expressed his admiration for PSG's quality, despite their recent struggles, including a 3-1 loss to Monaco in Ligue 1 last weekend and only two wins in their last seven Champions League matches.

He expects a challenging match against PSG, citing their world-class players and manager, and emphasized the importance of discipline and strategy over the two legs of the tie.

Rosenior confirmed that Levi Colwill has returned to training and Jamie Gittens is available again, but declined to reveal who will start in goal between Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen.
