The statement noted that Tongo's remarkable life was marked by a long history of public service, including his tenure as Chairman of Funakaye Local Government Area, Special Adviser to the Gombe State Government, and a member of the Gombe State House of Assembly before his election to the House of Representatives.

At the time of his death, Tongo held the position of Chairman of the Nigeria–United Arab Emirates Parliamentary Friendship Group in the House, a testament to his esteemed reputation as a seasoned politician and respected parliamentarian.

He was hailed as a passionate advocate for the welfare and development of his constituents, bringing a wealth of wisdom, experience, and insight to legislative debates, and his contributions significantly enriched governance and parliamentary discussions.
