LAWMA shuts Tejuosho–Ojuelegba shops over waste offences

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has begun sealing shops and commercial plazas along the Tejuosho–Ojuelegba corridor for violating the state’s waste management regulations.

The enforcement exercise, carried out by the agency’s Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team on Thursday, followed the expiration of compliance notices earlier issued to affected business owners.

LAWMA Managing Director Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin said the operation underscores the agency’s resolve to enforce environmental laws and maintain cleanliness across Lagos.

“Following the expiration of compliance notices, LAWMA’s Waste Investigation, Surveillance and Enforcement (WISE) team has commenced the sealing of non-compliant shops and plazas along the Tejuosho–Ojuelegba corridor,” he said on his official X page.

According to him, the enforcement action specifically targeted businesses that ignored directives on proper waste management and persisted in practices that undermine the state’s environmental sanitation efforts.

“The enforcement action targets premises that failed to comply with waste management regulations and continued the indiscriminate disposal of waste on public roads,” he added.

He noted that the WISE team moved in after the affected property owners failed to act on official compliance notices served on them.

Gbadegesin stressed that environmental sustainability requires the cooperation of residents and business operators, warning that convenience cannot take precedence over public health.

“A clean Lagos requires compliance, not convenience. We will continue to enforce environmental laws to protect public health, keep our roads clean, and hold offenders accountable,” he said.

The agency urged residents, traders and business owners to adhere strictly to approved waste disposal procedures.

LAWMA has, in recent months, intensified enforcement against environmental offenders as part of the Lagos State Government’s efforts to improve sanitation, discourage indiscriminate waste disposal and ensure cleaner public spaces across the metropolis.
