Lawal launches $200 million lithium production facility in Zamfara, aiming to create 2,000 employment opportunities

Governor Dauda Lawal has launched a groundbreaking $200 million lithium mining and processing plant in Boko, Zurmi Local Government Area, a move that is expected to spur economic growth in Zamfara.
nThis development was announced in a statement issued by the Governor's spokesperson, Sulaiman Idris, on Sunday in Gusau, highlighting the project's significance in the state's economic transformation.
nAccording to Idris, Governor Lawal described the project as a major catalyst for responsible mining, industrial development, and economic diversification, marking the beginning of a new era in Zamfara's drive towards harnessing its mineral resources.
nThe governor emphasized that the project represents a significant milestone in the state's efforts to leverage its abundant mineral resources through responsible investment, value addition, job creation, and sustainable development.
nLawal noted that his administration is committed to transforming the solid minerals sector from informal, unregulated activities to a transparent and value-driven industry that benefits the people directly.
nHe observed that global demand for lithium and other critical minerals has increased due to their importance in renewable energy, electric vehicles, modern technology, and industrial transformation.
nLawal stressed that Zamfara must transition from being a mere supplier of raw mineral resources to an active participant in the entire mining value chain through local processing, value addition, skills development, and industrialization.
nThe governor commended companies such as Zam Mining Company Ltd, Bima Mines Ltd, Jinlide Mining Co. Ltd, and Bevo Mines Ltd for investing in the state, demonstrating that Zamfara remains open to legitimate businesses and responsible partnerships.
nLawal assured investors that the state government would continue to provide support through improved collaboration, infrastructure development, and policies that encourage sustainable investment.
nHe emphasized the importance of treating local communities as partners in development through employment opportunities, skills acquisition, community projects, environmental protection, and meaningful corporate social responsibility initiatives.
nLawal stated that development occurs when resources are managed efficiently and transparently, and the government provides an enabling environment for investors to operate responsibly.
nThe $200 million Zamfara Lithium Mining and Processing Plant is a joint investment by Zam Mining Company Ltd, Bima Mines Ltd, Jinlide Mining Co. Ltd, and other partners, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria.
nLawal noted that Zamfara has long been known for its vast mineral deposits, and the true measure of this blessing lies in how it is responsibly harnessed to improve the lives of the people.
nSince the inception of his administration, Lawal has been committed to changing the narrative of the solid minerals sector in Zamfara from informality to organization and from exploitation to value creation.
nThe establishment of the processing plant aligns with his vision of moving beyond extraction towards local processing, value addition, skills development, and industrial growth.
nLawal assured that his administration is committed to mining activities that respect the law, protect the environment, and provide direct benefits to local communities.
nThe governor mandated that operators prioritize local employment, skills transfer, community development, environmental protection, and corporate social responsibility.
nLawal commended the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration for repositioning Nigeria's solid minerals sector as a key driver of economic diversification and national development.
nZam Mining Ltd, one of the largest technologically advanced mineral processing facilities on the African continent, commended Governor Lawal's administration for creating an enabling environment that has restored investors' confidence and attracted major investments to Zamfara.
nThe project is expected to create at least 2,000 direct and indirect jobs, with priority given to qualified residents of Zamfara, especially those in the host communities.
nResidents of Boko community expressed delight at the investment, saying it would help address unemployment and poverty not only in the area but also across the state.
