Law enforcement launches campaign against illegal vehicle registration tags in Kwara

The Kwara State Police command has initiated a statewide operation aimed at cracking down on vehicles bearing improper registration number plates, which is set to commence on Monday.

This exercise will specifically target vehicles with covered, obscured, unauthorised, defaced, altered, or missing plates, as outlined in a statement released on Sunday in Ilorin by the command's spokesperson, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi.

According to Commissioner of Police, Kwara Command, Mr Ojo Adekimi, this action is a direct result of a directive from the Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu, and is intended to bolster public safety and prevent criminals from concealing their identities.

Adekimi explained that the enforcement is necessary because some criminals utilise concealed or unregistered vehicles to carry out unlawful activities, and the goal is to strengthen public safety and prevent such incidents.

The commissioner has instructed Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and the State Traffic Officer to enforce the directive and ensure full compliance across their respective jurisdictions throughout the state.

He has also warned that any vehicle found to be in violation of the directive will be impounded and investigated under existing laws, with no exemptions or special treatment granted to offenders.

Commissioner Adekimi stressed that the law will be applied fairly, firmly, and without compromise, as he stated, "There will be no preferential treatment, exemption or special consideration for anyone.

Adekimi advised motorists and vehicle owners to remove any coverings or obstructions from their number plates and ensure that only valid and clearly visible registration plates are displayed.

He also encouraged vehicle owners to keep their relevant documents up to date and readily available for inspection, as this measure would improve vehicle identification and support criminal investigations.

The exercise is expected to assist security agencies in tracking fleeing suspects, as criminals have increasingly used hidden or altered plates to evade detection.

Adekimi warned that deliberate tampering, covering, or operating without proper plates would attract legal action, and "Anyone found violating the directive will face the full weight of the law," he cautioned.

The commissioner assured residents that officers would conduct the exercise professionally and impartially, reaffirming the command's commitment to protecting lives, property, and maintaining security across Kwara.
