Law enforcement intervenes to halt worship gathering at University of Calabar due to violent outburst

A conflict at the Chapel of Redemption, University of Calabar, was brought under control by the Police in Cross River, who stepped in to prevent a violent clash during a Sunday service.

The situation began when the University's caretaker committee and an interim chaplain, appointed by the Vice-Chancellor, attempted to take over the service, which was being led by the chapel's Chaplain, Rev. Joseph Ushie.

The intervention by the police was prompted by the resulting confusion among worshippers, with the service ultimately being halted to prevent further escalation.

DCP Godwin Etim of the state command explained that he ordered the service to be stopped due to the risk of a breakdown in law and order, citing the potential for bloodshed if the situation was allowed to continue.

Etim stated that he had spoken with the chaplain, the interim chaplain, and a member of the church's Board of Trustees, and they had agreed to suspend the service to maintain peace.

A meeting has been scheduled for Monday at the police command, where the parties involved will be invited to discuss the matter further, with Etim urging all parties to remain calm in the meantime.

A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt had previously issued an order restraining the university's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Offiong Offiong, and others from interfering with the chapel's premises and activities.

The order was granted in response to a suit filed by Rev. Joseph Ushie, the chapel's Chaplain, who sought to prevent intimidation, threats, or assault while exercising his right to worship at the chapel.

Through his counsel, Chief Mba Ukweni, SAN, Ushie had prayed for a Motion Ex Parte, which was granted by Justice Phoebe Ayua, directing the parties to maintain the status quo pending the hearing and determination of the application, set for Aug. 20.
