Launch of New Panel to Oversee Research Initiatives, Educational Programs and Publishing Efforts

The Nigerian Guild of Editors has established a Research, Training and Publications Committee to address the disparity between academic training and professional practice in the media industry, with Eze Anaba, the Guild's President, emphasizing the need for a balanced approach.

The committee, chaired by Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna, comprises experienced journalists and media professionals, including Dr. Tony Onyima, Ms. Angela Agoawike, Dr. Iyobosa Uwugiaren, and Dr. Kabir Alabi Garba, who will work together to promote journalism scholarship and research.

According to Eze Anaba, the committee's membership was carefully selected to ensure a blend of academic scholarship and industry experience, with the goal of strengthening journalism practice and addressing the disconnect between journalism education and newsroom operations.

The committee's terms of reference include conducting research on issues relevant to journalism and media practice, such as readership and viewership trends, and developing training programs to enhance the skills and knowledge of journalists and media professionals.

The committee will also publish materials, including books and journals, to promote excellence and best practices in journalism, with the aim of strengthening the professionalism of Guild members, as outlined by Eze Anaba during the inauguration ceremony.

Prof. Okunna, the committee's chairman, described the initiative as timely and significant, expressing confidence that the committee will add value to the Guild and the media industry due to the calibre and experience of its members.

The inauguration ceremony, which took place at the Editors' House in Ikeja, Lagos, was attended by the Guild's General Secretary, Onuoha Ukeh, and other representatives, including Gabriel Akinadewo and Rose Moses.

The Research, Training and Publications Committee will serve a two-year term, during which it will work to promote knowledge, skills, and best practices in journalism and media through research, training, and publications.
