Large-scale deployment of American airborne troops reaches the Middle East amid escalating military presence

Thousands of soldiers from the U.S. Army's elite 82nd Airborne Division have begun arriving in the Middle East, according to two U.S. officials who spoke to Reuters on Monday, as President Donald Trump considers his next moves in the conflict with Iran.

This development comes after Reuters first reported on March 18 that the Trump administration was contemplating deploying thousands of additional U.S. troops to the Middle East, which could potentially involve sending forces into Iranian territory.

The newly deployed paratroopers, who are based out of Fort Bragg, North Carolina, are part of a larger buildup that includes thousands of additional sailors, Marines, and Special Operations forces already sent to the region.

Over the weekend, approximately 2,500 Marines arrived in the Middle East, further bolstering the U.S. military presence in the area.

According to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, the exact destination of the soldiers is not being disclosed, but their deployment is not unexpected.

The additional Army soldiers include elements of the 82nd Airborne Division headquarters, as well as logistics and other support personnel, and one brigade combat team.

No decision has been made to send troops into Iran, but the deployment is intended to enhance capacity for potential future operations in the region, according to one of the sources.

The soldiers could be utilized for various purposes in the conflict with Iran, including a potential attempt to capture Kharg Island, which serves as the hub for 90 percent of Iran's oil exports.

Earlier this month, Reuters reported that there had been discussions within the Trump administration about launching an operation to seize the island, a move that would be highly risky due to Iran's ability to reach the island with missiles and drones.

Previous reports have also indicated that the administration has discussed using ground forces inside Iran to extract highly enriched uranium, a mission that could require U.S. troops to operate deep within Iranian territory for extended periods.

Internal Trump administration discussions have also explored the possibility of deploying U.S. troops to Iran to secure safe passage for oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, a mission that would primarily involve air and naval forces but could also require ground troops along Iran's shoreline.

On Monday, Trump stated that the United States is engaged in talks with a "more reasonable regime" to bring an end to the conflict in Iran, while also reiterating his warning to Tehran to open the Strait of Hormuz or face potential U.S. attacks on its oil wells and power plants.

The potential use of U.S. ground troops, even for a limited mission, poses significant political risks for Trump, given the low level of public support for the Iran campaign and his pre-election pledges to avoid entangling the U.S. in new Middle East conflicts.

Since the start of Operation Epic Fury on February 28, the U.S. has carried out strikes against more than 11,000 targets, resulting in over 300 U.S. troops injured and 13 service members killed.
