Lagos Teams Up with Law Enforcement to Enhance On-Duty Visibility for Security Personnel

The Lagos State Government and the Zone 2 Police Command Headquarters are joining forces to tackle vision problems among security personnel, a move that has garnered widespread support.

This development comes as Dr. Opeyemi Ogunsaki, Senior Special Assistant to the Ekiti State governor on Public Health, and other notable figures have praised Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu's free eye care programme for security personnel, describing it as a timely initiative.

The ongoing medical outreach, now in its second day, aims to provide vision screening and corrective glasses to 1,000 officers, and has received praise from senior police officers and stakeholders who have hailed it as a groundbreaking effort.

According to Ogunsaki, the collaboration between the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police is a laudable step towards bolstering occupational health support for security personnel, and aligns with recent reforms in the police medical system.

Ogunsaki noted that the programme reflects a growing emphasis on preventive healthcare within the force, particularly since the upgrade of the Police medical services to a Directorate in 2025.

He commended the institutional occupational health system between the Lagos State Government and the Nigeria Police Force, saying it is highly commendable and marks a significant shift towards preventive medicine and healthcare responses.

Mr. Damilare Orimoloye, Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sanwo-Olu on Sports, explained that the initiative was designed to address safety concerns, particularly issues related to poor eyesight among drivers and security personnel.

The programme, which initially targeted drivers due to the increasing number of road accidents linked to vision challenges, was later extended to police officers who play a critical role in maintaining road safety and public security.

Orimoloye commended officials within the Lagos State Government and the Ministry of Transportation for supporting the programme, noting that public participation has been encouraging and the initiative is a welcome development.

The outreach also drew the presence of popular Nigerian reality television personality, Anita Akide, also known as Tacha, who described the initiative as thoughtful and impactful.

Tacha praised Governor Sanwo-Olu for prioritising the welfare of security personnel, stressing that police officers deserve greater support considering the risks associated with their duties and the sacrifices they make for the nation.

She revealed that she personally participated in the eye examination and discovered a minor vision issue that would require corrective glasses, and expressed her admiration for the initiative, saying it resonated with her deeply.
