Lagos Taskforce impounds 278 Okada over traffic, security violations

Operatives of the Lagos State Taskforce have impounded 278 commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, over traffic violations and alleged involvement in criminal activities across the metropolis.

The Chairman of the Taskforce, CSP Adetayo Akerele, disclosed this on Sunday, saying the enforcement exercise followed the state government’s directive banning Okada operations on highways and other restricted routes under the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

He said the operation was part of efforts to restore order on Lagos roads and strengthen the state’s security framework.

“The exercise is also part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the security architecture of Lagos State, protect lives and property, and prevent the activities of criminal elements,” he said.

Akerele explained that the weeklong operation covered several parts of the state following earlier enforcement actions carried out weeks ago.

Areas affected included Ikorodu, Festac–First Gate, Mazamaza, Iyana Iba, Egbeda, Iyana Ipaja, Ikotun Roundabout, Ojodu, Berger, Igando, LASU–Iba Road, and other major corridors.

According to him, some of the operators were arrested for illegally riding on restricted highways, while others were allegedly involved in transporting illicit substances and hazardous materials such as petroleum products and gas. Some were also found conveying school children in unsafe conditions.

He stated that a total of 278 motorcycles were seized during the operation, adding that the crackdown is aimed at enforcing compliance across restricted areas.

Akerele added that all impounded motorcycles would be processed for forfeiture through the courts in line with existing laws.

He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to sustained enforcement, warning that the Taskforce would not relent until full compliance is achieved.

“We will not be cowed or fold our arms and allow people of criminal intent to overrun Lagos,” he said.
